Mō te tūranga mahi | About the role
We are looking for an experienced Policy Advisor to join our dynamic International team.
The International team provides climate focussed policy analysis and advice to the Government on international climate matters relevant to Aotearoa New Zealand.
A focus of this role will be supporting the team's work programme which includes:
- Policy analysis and advice to support New Zealand's Paris Agreement obligations.
- Supporting international negotiations aligned to NZs climate policy objectives.
- Advice on aspects of the Paris Agreement, OECD work programme, regional and bilateral climate priorities and the wider international landscape of climate mitigation.
- Contributing to international processes, including achieving and setting NDCs, reporting requirements like the Biennial Transparency Report, and NZ's wider influence on climate issues.
- Lead for international issues relating to carbon markets, climate mitigation, and climate adaptation.
- Forming and maintaining relationships on climate with international organisations, carbon project actors, other countries and the private sector.
- Supporting international engagements.

Our ideal candidate will bring:
- demonstrated experience providing policy advice to senior leaders and Ministers
- ability to work across a number of work streams and to manage competing priorities
- ability to communicate clearly and succinctly in a variety of communication settings and styles, both written and verbal for briefing Ministers
- excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to foster good stakeholder relationships
- proven organisational skills with the ability to work independently, think ahead, prioritise, and meet deadlines while preserving high levels of accuracy and confidentiality
- a can-do attitude with ability to work effectively as a team player while working in a fast-paced, ambiguous environment
- knowledge of, and commitment to, developing your cultural capability and capacity in Te Tiriti o Waitangi and Te ao Māori perspectives
- A developing understanding of the Paris Agreement and how it has informed the CCRA (Zero Carbon Amendment), and international cooperation mechanisms including understanding international negotiations and international carbon markets, would be beneficial in this role.
Whānuitanga Utu ā-Tau | Salary range
Salary range for this role is $79,598 to $96,372 pa. Appointment within this range will be based on skills and experience.
